History
I began woodworking in 1986 under the apprenticeship of woodworker and architect Max Green. Max built freeform designs in furniture, as well as custom-designed kitchens. While I was working for Max, our work was featured in Southern Homes Magazine and Architectural Digest. Max relocated in 1990, and I continued my apprenticeship with master cabinetmaker Bruce Nygren, building and installing high-end European-styled cabinets. After working for Bruce for three years, and having bought my first house that needed major renovations, I decided to broaden my skills by working with renovation specialist John Wesley Hammer. This eventually led me to starting my own renovation business while still making furniture as a hobby. During this time I built a set of five tables designed to look like horses, with heads, necks, legs and tails. These were custom-made for artist Gene Alcott to paint, and were featured in Atlanta's High Museum of Art.
In 1998 I bought an old, defunct general store along the French Broad River in North Carolina. The building needed major renovations, but it had a 2000 square foot basement in which I could build the woodworking shop of my dreams. I soon began building furniture from the old heart-pine shelving and chestnut lumber that had been stored there. This led to a series of rustic tables using the old pine shelving. The sides and legs were painted with layers of milk paint, then sanded and distressed to make a table that had a timeworn look of days gone by. These tables were sold at William Word Antiques in Atlanta's Miami Circle and were featured in Merrimon Gallery in Asheville as well as Firewalker Gallery in Marshall, North Carolina.
In the last year, after running out of the antique materials, I decided to begin making a more refined style of hardwood furniture using graceful curvature inspired from plant foms and animal anatomy. After designing and building several of these tables, I realized that this was the new direction I wanted to take.
